The Stanley Cup is back in play as the season begins. The Montreal Canadiens face off in Toronto against the Maple Leafs on Wednesday. There are actually 4 games on Wednesday with the majority of teams starting their season on Thursday October 9, 2014.
All 30 NHL teams (23 based in the United States, 7 based in Canada) aspire for progress this year, for a playoff berth and a long run into the playoffs (ultimately winning the grand prize). However, they also continue to have more serious hopes like a major decrease in head injuries and an increase in sell-out crowds.
Regardless of who you cheer for, and what side you are on, you should be able to enjoy another full season of the fastest game on ice.
Did you know it has been 3 years since an Eastern Conference team has won the cup? 2011!!! That was the year that the Boston Bruins won it all and left the Vancouver Canucks (the last Canadian team to make it to the cup) hanging dry.
Is this the year that the East hits backs and wins it all? With Chara, Rask, Bergeron, Krecji, Lucic and company, the Boston Bruins are still going to be a threat The New York Rangers will also try to replicate their Stanley Cup Final appearance (but maybe last year was their year...). Montreal has high hopes, adding P.A. Parenteau and Tom Gilbert but lost a few key players (Gionta and Gorges). Will the Canadiens' dressing room lack a leader? They do not plan on adding a Captain for the 2014-2015 season. Maybe Pittsburgh has one last push in them. When you have Crobsy and Malkin, you always have a chance. What about young teams like Tampa Bay or even Columbus? Both made the playoffs last year and could have made it a round deeper if they got a few bounces. Washington always seem to be in the mix so maybe this year Ovy scores 65 goals and they get some secondary scoring to push them over the hump!
Here are our Eastern Conference playoff teams (in no particular order):
New York Rangers
Tampa Bay Lightning
Columbus Blue Jackets
Toronto Maple Leafs
Our Eastern Conference predictions has Montreal edging Pittsburgh in the conference final, advancing to the Stanley Cup for the first time in 22 years! If you notice, Detroit is not on this list and that is not by mistake. You heard it here first, The Red Wings will miss the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in 23 years (last missed postseason was 1989-1990).
Unfortunately, we believe that the following teams will miss the playoffs this year:Buffalo Sabres
